National Kitten Day: Here's What You Need to Know

According to The Humane Society of the United States, over 45 million households in the U.S. own at least one cat. This is a large number of people who love and care for cats, probably because they are some of the most cuddly and cute creatures on Earth! Today we are dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of adopting kittens from shelters.

What Day is National Kitten Day?

July 10th is National Kitten Day, which is a day to celebrate kittens and the people who love them. The day was founded by animal advocate Colleen Paige in 2012. Since its launch, it has gained national attention and has been sponsored by popular pet brands such as The Blue Buffalo Corporation.

On this day, people around the world can post photos of their adoptable kittens on social media with the hashtags #kittenday and #nationalkittenday. One of the main goals of National Kitten Day is to bring attention to the over-population of cats and the need for more homes for them.

Why is National Kitten Day important?

Feline friends are often taken for granted despite to their lovable faces and funny habits. Sadly, many kittens end up in shelters due to overpopulation and lack of adoption opportunities.

The unfortunate truth is that nearly 1.4 million cats are euthanized every year, making it one of the leading causes of animal death in the United States. Another goal of National Kitten Day is to reduce the number of cats in shelters by educating people on how they can care for their feline friends properly.

How Can You Celebrate National Kitten Day?

There are many ways to celebrate National Kitten Day, including donating to a local cat shelter, making a donation to a national or international organization dedicated to the rescue and rehabilitation of cats, or adopting a new kitten! Once you start adopting these adorable creatures, you might not be able to stop! But that's not too big of a problem, because life is just better with a cat.

If you have already adopted a cat, you can do your part by making sure you spay and neuter your furry friends. Reducing the number of kittens born without homes can reduce the number of kittens that end up euthanized.

National Kitten Day is a day to celebrate kittens and the people who love them. By raising awareness about the over-population of cats and the need for more homes for them, we can work to make the world a better place for kittens.
