Ever hear of the dog days of summer? That's where we are right now. The days are hot and long until daylight savings time hits and eventually, it will be cooler again. But why is it called the dog days?
According to National Geographic, it actually has to do with when the Greeks believed in the star, Canis Major, as a dog chasing Lepus. They believed that it started in late July and carried over into August.
While we still wish that it was about actual dogs, it seems this legend is based on the stars. However, in honor of this name, Brisco ranked the best dogs to own as a pet. Check out our list below!
1. Labrador Retriever
This is the most popular dog breed in America and there are many reasons why. Labs are energetic and friendly, perfect for people with children. They're the best companion and they're easy to train.
2. German Shepherd
This police dog is the perfect buddy. They are highly regarded as a hard worker no matter what job they're assigned. Shepherds are easy to train and fiercely loyal.
3. Golden Retriever
Also at the top is the golden retriever, the playful family dog. They're featured heavily in movies and TV, but seeing as they're easy to train and joyful, it makes sense that these dogs rank highly.
4. Bulldog (American and French)
If you're looking for a pup with a little less energy but the same amount of cuteness, a bulldog is for you. While they will curl up in your lap for snuggles, they'll also be jazzed to go on a walk (or three.) Keep them by the air conditioning during those dog days, though. With their infamous snouts, shortness of breath is easy to come by, so keep them cool at all times!
5. Border Collie
A high energy border collie is perfect for someone who has the time and energy for one. They need to be entertained (they did use to be herding dogs back in the day.) With their beautiful coats and obedient manner, put your energy into this canine and you'll love your new addition to the family.
6. Husky
This dog is sure to be a handful, but he's worth it. They get along well with other dogs and families since they're used to being in a pack. Make sure you put them around other dogs and be sure to be home for them often - huskies don't like being left alone for a long period of time.
7. Chihuahua
Don't mistake this dog by judging its size. Fiercely loyal, chihuahuas attach themselves to one person and make sure they vet anyone who comes into contact with their human. They're very expressive - if you're looking for a pup with personality, this is the choice for you!
8. Pug
The pug makes its way onto the list because they're very well rounded. You can put a pug in a city apartment or a large house, add it to your family or make it your only companion, make it your only pet or give it a pet sibling. This easygoing dog is a great choice for anyone getting a dog for the first time, too!
While there are over 300 registered breeds, these top 8 are great options for anyone looking to get a pet. Make sure if you plan on adopting you research everything you'll need to be prepared. For more information, you can go to the American Kennel Club website and read up on training, personalities, food tips, and more based on your breed. Just remember - if you're looking to add a dog to your family, check out your local American Society For The Prevention Of Cruelty To Animals (ASPCA) for listings of cats, dogs, and more up for adoption in your area.
